As humans, we have several aspects of our lives that we consider important.
From our business to our relationships, and hobbies to our health, it’s only natural to want to reach a “level 10” in each of them.
And if you consider successful, accomplished people like Richard Branson or Elon Musk, we know it’s definitely possible to juggle multiple goals.
They may focus on only one task at a time but they’re able to move the needle on different aspects of their lives on a regular basis.
In case you missed it, we talked about how many goals is too many goals in the previous blog post and we concluded that rather than conform to an arbitrary number of goals, focus instead on the quality of your goals while considering your constraints.
This week, we’re diving into how to successfully juggle multiple goals and I’m sharing four steps to do just that.
01 | WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS
There are multiple advantages of writing things down but even more powerful benefits when you write down your goals.
Not only will you be able to clearly define your goals, but you’ll also be able to free your mind for a higher level of thinking.
Remember how we said that your mind is most useful to you when it isn’t overwhelmed? Indeed it’s most valuable to you when it can focus on processing things, not storing things.
Also, it’s much more manageable to enlist the help of a tangible, organizing tool (even if it is as simple as pen and paper) to record tasks and keep track of them.
Bottomline: write things down = a clear mind = focused thinking = focused action.
02 | WRITE DOWN ALL THE STEPS NEEDED TO REACH YOUR GOALS
The next step is to break down your goal into all the steps that it would take for you to turn your “goal conceived” into “goal achieved.”
In other words, visibly list the sequential action steps needed to turn those goals into reality.
At this point, feel free to set targets, milestones, or mini-goals so as to avoid overwhelm and maintain your motivation all throughout your process.
03 | SCHEDULE EACH STEP IN YOUR DAILY CALENDAR
Once you’ve clearly defined all the goals you want to accomplish as well as the action steps needed to turn these goals into reality, it’s time to put it to the test and see if everything fits in your schedule.
Keep in mind that while you’re working towards your goals, not everything you do on a daily basis will be directly related to your goals… and that’s completely normal!
Like everyone else, you also have roles and responsibilities to fulfill which may or may not always be related your most important goals right now.
For example, if you’re looking to start your own business, you might still have to stay at your current 9-5 job to pay the bills. At the same time, you may also have to be a good spouse and parent, understanding friend and co-worker, or responsible neighbor or community member.
Remember how we considered your constraints in the previous blog post? This is when you’ll be able to determine whether or not you have one too many goals.
04 | EVALUATE
Now that you’ve scheduled everything in your calendar, it’s time to evaluate. This, no doubt, is the most important step, so make sure to go over it thoroughly.
Given your unique goals, background, and situation, ask these eight questions:
Is pursuing all my current goals realistic?
Is pursuing all my current goals going to burn me out or overwhelm me?
Is pursuing all my current goals going to negatively affect my health and relationships?
Which goals can I delete, defer, automate, or delegate?
Which goals and action steps should I prioritize right now?
How will prioritizing these goals and action steps impact my life right now?
Since I’m saying “yes” to these goals, what should I say “no” to?
What outside sources can I tap into so that I could do things easier, faster, or more effectively?
